A very small but effective technique that can help YOU to reduce unnecessary spending in YOUR life. 

Take out a small post-it note. On it you write this question:

Do I really want or need to buy this?

Then put that small post-it note in your wallet or on your credit card. Make sure
you see it every time when you are about to make a purchase.

Now, I'm not saying to use this tip as way to become as frugal as Uncle Scrooge.

I haven't. But I have used it to spend my money a bit more consciously and to
think before I purchase something. 

This technique can also be helpful for finding a trouble spot in how you spend your
money.

Maybe you buy clothes, fast food or books on impulse to satisfy an immediate

need at the time? 

But when you look at it later on, when you have had some time to think, you
perhaps see that you didn't need or even want all those clothes or books.

Because maybe you are more interested in spending that money on traveling
somewhere or on one really awesome piece of clothing rather than the four you
bought.

By questioning your habits and by raising your consciousness about how you
spend your money you can save up much of what you earn and spend it on what
you truly, deep down want in your life.

Once Ganesha reached Kailash and noticed a big scratch on the face of Goddess Parvati.

Ganesh wanted to know how Mother Goddess got hurt.

Goddess Parvati then said that Ganesha was responsible for the painful scratch.

Ganapati never did it so he was baffled.

Then Mother Goddess asked Ganesha whether he had hurt anyone on the day.

Ganesha could not remember any incident.

Then Mother Goddess asked what had happened in the morning when He was drinking milk.

Ganesha then told that a cat was disturbing Him while He was drinking the milk and so He took a stick and hit it on the face.

Mother Goddess then told Ganesha that she got that beating. She explained to Him that She is present in all living and nonliving and whenever any being is hurt, it She who gets hurt.

From that day Ganesha started seeing Goddess Parvati in all women and in all beings and therefore remained a bachelor.

Pratapgarh Farms-NCR Day Trip from Delhi & Gurgaon

If you are looking for a day out in the green fields, swaying trees and some good food and fun family activities, Pratapgarh Farms(Jhajjar, Haryana, 80kms from Delhi) is an attractive option. The ad has been appearing frequently highlighting its appeal and my review is based on a personal visit there with my family and friends recently.

This agricultural and rural setting oriented farm is located amongst verdant mustard fields.The setting is open and outdoorsy. How to reach there is given at the bottom of the review there. The entry ticket is Rs 690 for adults and its very economical, considering that this encompasses all the rides and activities on the farm and unlimited food (majorly North Indian delicacies).

Its advisable to reach here bright and early. The farm opens at 9.30 am and there is spacious parking outside for 4 wheelers and even buses and tempos, the latter also frequenting this popular place. Its a hit with school children, college hroups and even for corporate day-outs besides the regular family visitors. As teh day progresses, more and more people pour in making it overcrowded and noisy. As soon as one enters, a traditional welcome is given with aarti and tikka. The security guard punches the entry ticket. The ticket is a precious document here since it contains the entry for all the activities(pictorially represented) and is required to be produced for checking before the activity. So keep it safely. It also gives the plan layout for the farm.

The farm is divided into 6 LAWNS, each delineated for a specific set of matching activities..

LAWN 1: archery, airgun, gulel, dart throwing, DJ Music

LAWN 2: Camel ride, Camel cart, pottery, charkha (loom), mehandi and herbal gardens

LAWN 3: Dairy, biogas plant, vermicompost, Mudbath and tubewell bathing, etc

LAWN 4: Burma bridge, tugofwar, table tennis, carrom, kanchagoli, kite flying

LAWN 5: cricket, volleyball, soccer, pithoo,  etc

LAWN 6: Tractor, bullock cart ride, agriculture activities

Food: There is traditional Indian breakfast of bajra and makki rotis, sarson ka sag served with delicious home made white butter and jaggery(gud) served in the small huts in Lawn 1. Village ladies sit near typical wood fired ovens and make the food fresh and piping hot. There is rabri, chach and leminade served all day long. Also on offer are alloo parathas , puri-aloo and gajar ka halwa to start the day with. 

Once done with food, you can opt for the multitude of games and rides. We started with the camel ride and it was quite enjoyable though short lived. Then it was time to cross the Burma bridge over the pond, pose by the Village well and see some enthusiastic males dipping in the tubewell bath section. One can carry a change of clothing if you wish to indelge in this but a word of caution: The water is greenish and not very clean and there is no provacy for ladies to change. In the summer months it can be enjoyed  but by the male members and children only ,  for lack of privacy factor.

Then for the energetic and enthusiastic there are many sports on offer like football, cricket, basketball etc. The sporting gear is all available at the premises and one need not carry anything with them. What I liked most about the entire experience was the proximity to natural beauty found abundantly in Lawn 6. Its a relatively quieter lawn/corner and there are a variety of vegetables planted there like spinach, carrots, turnip etc . Its exciting for the children and adults(who have the child alive within them!) to see the plants growing and flourishing in green fields. There are leisurly bullock cart rides and tractor rides to take you around this vegetation farm.

The DJ is super active and belted out all the current hits all in nonstop succession and the dance floor was never vacant as there were enough dancers who wanted to enjoy the festive environment.

On the flip side, the landscaping is still immature and trees were of short height. Dust level was high and so was the sheer number of people all cloistered in the lawns that have been bunched together without any buffer zones to let the crowds breathe. There are lobg queues for mehandi and pottery etc and one has to wait patiently. So if you are prepared for a relaxing, no hurry kind of day then its all good fun.

 

For a day full of food, fun and a glimpse of rural India , Pratapgarh Farms is one of the best options near Delhi.

How to Reach : Take MG Road to IFFCO CHOWK->RAJIV CHOWK->Take left underpass and turn right towards Pataudi Chowk-> Farukhnagar Town->Jhajjar Town. From Jhajjar there are regular markings to guide you to the destination.

  Kartari Yoga is mentioned in many texts of Vedic Astrology. It is important for students and practitioners of Vedic astrology to understand the right meaning of some particular Sanskrit words (in its translated version or otherwise). The literal meaning of Kartari is scissors. The action of scissors is to cut which comes in between its blades. Thus, Kartari Yoga means a Yoga / combination that cuts a house / planet and destroys some of its benefic effects of fructification. In the process, this yoga is likely to render some malefic effects if it is formed with cruel & malefic planets. If it is formed, with benefic planets, its effects may turn out to be benefic. There are four type of Kartari Yoga which are as follows:-
  
  (i). Atipaap kartari Yoga: This Yoga is formed when a House / planet is hemmed in between a malefic planet in retrogression in 2nd house / position to it and another malefic planet in 12th house /position in direct motion to the affected house / planet. The scissors effect of this Yoga is most malefic among Paap Kartari yoga.
  
  According to scriptures, if a female in her birth chart has this Yoga to natural ascendant and Moon ascendant, she may prove to be KUL NAASHAK (destroyer of linage which means lady with bad luck to its family) of her parental and in-laws house.
  
  (ii). Paap Kartari Yoga: In this case, a House / planet is hemmed in between malefic planets. This Yoga is grade-ii malefic Yoga among this yoga. The particular house under this yoga will fail to fructify in a desired benefic manner.
  
  (iii). Ardha Paap Kartari Yoga: in this case, a House / planet is hemmed in between a malefic planet on one side and a benefic planet on other side of it. This Yoga is of grade-iii malefic Yoga among Paap Kartari yoga.

KUMBH-"POT" MELA - A time for Self Churning

The basic story associated with Kumbh Mela is the churning of ocean or Samudra Manthan. The story is symbolic – the churning of ocean by Devas (demigods) and Asuras (Demons) is always taking place in us. When we finally defeat the craving of the body and ignorance, we will get the amruta or elixir of life. We are merged in truth. We defeat the temporary and find bliss in the permanent.

The Kumbh – the pot – is the human body. It is our free will as to what we want to churn out of it.

Kumbh Mela thus is an opportunity for us to reflect.

The Maudgil Brahmins in Jodhpur believes that they are the descendants of Ravana. They are planning to install an idol - showing Ravana as a worshipper of Shiva – at Navgraha temple on Fort road in Jodhpur. 

Legend has it that Jodhpur is the maternal home of Mandodari, daughter of the king of Mandore, ancient capital of Marwar. Mandodari was the wife of Ravana. Ravana is considered to the the son-in-law by Namdeo Vaishnav Samaj here.

The Maudgil Brahmins came to Mandore from Lanka during the marriage. They shifted to Jodhpur when the city was founded in the 15th century. They claim that their ancestors have been performing annual Shradh (death ceremony) during Dasara. Pinda Daan is also offered annually during the period.

How is Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti Celebrated?
This day is celebrated with great fervour and grandeur by the Sikhs. Like all guru purabs or the birth day celebrations of the Sikh guru during this occasion the Akhand Panth or the non-stop reading of Guru Granth Sahib is held for 48 hours which culminates on the birthday day. One day prior to the birthday a grand procession is taken out which is led by the five beloveds and the palanquin which carries the Guru Granth Sahib. The route of the procession is decorated with flags, flowers and banners and gatka teams and people singings hymns accompany the procession. On the day of the birthday celebrations begin as early as four in the morning with the singing of Asa-di-var and hymns from Guru Granth Sahib. On this day kirtan darbars and Katha or discourse is held in the gurudwaras. After the distribution of Karah Prasad or the sweet pudding, langar or community lunch is served for all in the gurudwaras round the clock. This day is celebrated with great religious fervour by the people who visit the gurudwaras to offers special prayers on this day.

Guru Gobind Singh History
Guru Gobind Singh was born in the year 1666 to the ninth guru of the Sikhs Guru Tegh Bahadur. He succeeded his father when he was just nine years old. His father had sacrificed his life to protect the religious freedom of the people. He lived in a period which was filled with political turmoil. During this period the Mughals had terrorised the people forcing them to convert to Islam. Guru Gobind Singh dedicated his life to help the helpless people against this exploitation and oppression by becoming both a saint and a soldier. He was a saint with great devotion to god and also a fearless soldier who followed Kshatriya Dharma to fight against oppression and injustice.
In the year 1699 he created Khalsa which is Order of the Pure to fight against all the injustice. He also appointed five men from lower caste and baptised them as his five beloved. These five men became models of the Khalsa and all the men were surnamed Singh which means lion. The members of Khalsa were to have great faith in God and were supposed to treat all the humans equally irrespective of their caste.
He was not only a saint and a soldier but also a poet and a philosopher. He authored many spiritual compositions including the Jaap Sahib to infuse the martial spirit in the people. All his compositions are compiled in a book called Dasam Granth Sahib.
It was he who declared the Guru Granth Sahib the Holy Scripture will be next the permanent Sikh guru

Why do we Chant Mantras ‘108’ Times?

On a mala or set of mantra counting beads, there are generally 108 beads, or some fraction of that number. The question arises” “Why are there 108 beads on a mala?”

The mala represents the ecliptic, the path of the sun and moon across the sky. Yogis divide the ecliptic into 27 equal sections called Nakshatras, and each of these into four equal sectors called Padas, or “Steps”, marking the 108 steps that the sun and moon take through heaven. Each is associated with a particular blessing force, with which you align yourself as you turn the beads.

The 109th bead is called the “Guru Bead”. It represents the summer and winter solstices, when the sun appears to stop in its course and reverse directions.

Traditionally, we stop at the 109th “Guru Bead”, flip the mala around in our hand and continue reciting their mantra as we move backward through the beads. It is said that the index finger and the little finger should not be used to count the mala. The mala should be held with the middle finger and counted using the thumb.

We are deeply interconnected with all of nature. Using a mala is a symbolic way of connecting ourselves with the cosmic cycles governing our universe.

Also, the distance between the earth and the sun is approximately 108 times the sun’s diameter. The diameter of the sun is about 108 times the earth’s diameter. And the distance between the earth and the moon is 108 times the moon’s diameter. This could be the reason as to why the ancient sages considered 108 such a sacred numbers

The microcosm (us) mirrors the macrocosm (the solar system). We could say that there are 108 steps between the ordinary human awareness and the divine light at the centre of our being. Each time we chant another mantra as our mala beads slip through our fingers, we are taking another step toward our own inner sun.

Some Points of Interest:

Heart Chakra: The charkas are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of tem, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-Realization.

Sanskrit Alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit Alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shaki. 54 times 2 is 108.

Upanishads: Some say there are 108 Upanishads, texts of the wisdom of the ancient sages.

Sri Yantra: On the Sri Yantra there are marmas where three lines intersect, and there are 54 such intersections. Each intersection has masculine and feminine, shiva and Shakti qualities. 54 times 2 equals 108. Thus, there are 108 points that define the Sri Yantra as well as the human body.

Astrology: There are 12 constellations and 9 are segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.

Gopis or Krishna: In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maidservants of Krishna.

Silver and the Moon: In astrology, the metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108.

Stages of the Soul: It is said that Atman, the human soul or centre goes through 108 stages on the journey.

KARTIK MONTH - Most Auspicious in the Year

In 2012, the period of Kartik month is from 29th October to 28th November. Devotees adopt purity and worship the god with pure and true hearts in this month. Holy bath, meditation, charity, marriage of goddess Tulsi are some of the religious ceremonies performed during the Kartik month and the one who performs them, gets relief from all the sins. It is considered one of the most auspicious month of the year, in which the devotees gets an opportunity to discard all evil deeds and adopt a pure way of life. The person observing the fasts in this month should follow certain rules and regulation to get good results, since it is believed that without following these rules the fast is not considered complete.

Rules of Observing Fast in Kartik Month

• The person observing the fast should sacrifice consuming vindictive food items.
• The observer should not eat someone else’s food.
• He/ she should not enter into any kind of quarrels or fights and should avoid going to any foreign lands.
• The food in the afternoon should be served on a leaf plate.
• The observer should adopt celibacy.
• He/ she should sleep on the floor.
• The observer should avoid eating gourd (lauki), carrot, wood apple, and stale food.
• He/ she should also avoid eating sesame seeds, urad dal, moong dal, peas etc.
• The observer should keep himself calm and content and should sacrifice aggression. Thus, behave like a saint.
• The observer should talk less and avoid entering into any quarrel or bitching about anyone.>
• The observer should sacrifice eating non-vegetarian food.

This temple, as obvious from the name, is dedicated to Somnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

There is quite a myth and legend that envelops the temple. According to folklore, Som is the name of the Moon God and was the son-in-law of Daksha. When Som was given some directions by Daksha, Som disregarded them. Daksha got furious and cursed Som that his light will wane. Before the curse, the moon was believed to be equally bright every night! After the curse, other Gods pleaded with Daksha to take it back. Daksha relented and asked Som to take a bath at the mouth of River Saraswati and worship Lord Shiva. The Lord was happy with his penance and reduced the waning to what we know as the lunar cycle.  Since then, Lord Shiva is known as Somdev. The Somdev Temple is believed to have been built by the Moon God Himself. People feel so because the temple has stood the test of time and vandals.

The Somdev Temple was apparently built by the Moon God in gold. Then Ravana supposedly rebuilt it in silver, then by Lord Krishna is wood and finally by Bhim, the second brother of the Pandavas, in stone.

On the day of the festival, THE IDOL is placed on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated outdoor tents for people to view and pay their homage. The priest, usually clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, then invokes life into the idol amidst the chanting of mantras. This ritual is called 'pranapratishhtha'. After this the 'shhodashopachara' (16 ways of paying tribute) f

ollows. Coconut, jaggery, 21 'modakas' (rice flour preparation), 21 'durva' (trefoil) blades and red flowers are offered. The idol is anointed with red unguent or sandal paste (rakta chandan). Throughout the ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda and Ganapati Atharva Shirsha Upanishad, and Ganesha stotra from the Narada Purana are chanted.

For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the image is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of all man.

* It is also used in epilepsy and skin diseases.

In Sanskrit it is called Kapotavanga, Somavalli, Saraswati, Suvarchala, Mahoushadhi,Surashreshta, Vaidhatree, Divyateja, Varaa, Parameshtinee and Soumyaa. 
It is a small plant with a stem and single leaf resembling the ear of mouse. It spreads very fast in low wet areas. In rainy season,it grows well. It is commonly seen in the hilly areas by the side of the road from Haridwar to Badri. Brahmi that we get here is the best one amongst all.
